Social Media for Social Good Directory

CHA-CHING!!  I just came across the extensive list of resources on Social Media for Social Good compiled by Socialbrite.org and DoSomething.org.

I also recommend Socialbrite’s Sharing Center, “a free learning center for nonprofits and changemakers”.

Hey, I’ve got some new shoes on…

Here is one of those inspiring stories about people making a difference with simple, yet powerful ideas.  Take a couple minutes to listen to this audio of an interview with Blake Mycoskie, founder of Toms Shoes.

It’s BOGO philanthropy! And I gotta love it. Continue reading

The Power of Bill Gates

Let me qualify this post by saying that I am posing a question, not an outright criticism.

But I can’t help but wonder…who is Bill Gates and how is he is changing the face of the world not only with his money but also with his opinions on development policy and his access to world leaders?

Gates is a famous businessman (formerly the world’s richest) and, since 2006, a full-time  philanthropist.  And, thinking about it, this is one powerful guy.

Yesterday, February 24th, Gates committed $200 million dollars to helping small farmers in developing regions. Continue reading

Don’t you just love a (global) good list?

I know I love a good list. And it’s nice to share the love (of a good list, in this case) on Valentine’s Day.

Check out Social Velocity’s A Monster List of Social Innovation Books, Blogs, Conferences, Funders.

I’m sure I’ll be using the same list to find more things to blog about here.  For example, I just found on the list Beth Kanter’s blog on How Nonprofits Can Use Social Media. In fact, I’m subscribing to the RSS right now!

What are some of your favorite lists of resources, blogs, or other information sources online?

Tell Me a Story

It makes sense. When you can identify with one person and her story, you are much more likely to help her.

A whole lot of people are giving online.

What a difference a decade makes! Network for Good released a survey results tracking the growth of online giving. Here are two impressive data points:

  • Only 4% of donors gave online in 2000.  In 2011, that figure was 65%.
  • A mere $3 million dollars in online donations in 2000 had grown to $140 million in 2011.

Have you donated money online? Do you prefer to donate online or by some other means?
